Inde the Harbor Porpoise
Meanwhile back in 2008, it was a warm and relatively quiet fourth of July day at home. On this particular holiday our lives intersected with the neonatal harbor porpoise who became known as “Inde.” Inde stranded on the beach of the waterfront house right in front of ours. I remember Mrs. McSquid being less than pleased to have the creature wash up on her July fourth outdoor buffet. So off we went down the dirt road adjacent to our farmhouse … .
The Twin Calves
The call came in from an angry farmer whose cow was having difficulty giving birth. He was less than pleased to have a woman answering the call, and his mood only went downhill when I told him I would be coming alone.
The roads were treacherous; an early Nor’easter had hit a few hours earlier. When I finally arrived after the harrowing drive in the mobile van, I saw a short man covered in chunks of crunchy snow, waving me down.
With the windows rolled all the way up and the heat blasting, I could still hear him shouting, “The barn is right over there! Hurry up! She’s got dystocia and it’s been hours already!”
I glanced in the direction he was pointing. Sleet burned my face. There were apparently no lights on in the barn. It was pitch black.
I had no idea where the barn was.
